The San Diego Food Blogger Bake Sale doesn’t usually feature too many guys, but we always had a few, from bakers to harried significant others conscripted into helping with the sale. One of those significant others was originally conscripted, but is now a veteran baker for the sale. He bakes, he sells, and he cashiers. When not baking or shaming his wife with excellent housekeeping skills (I’m really not a slob… sigh), he can be found as a manager in San Diego’s public transit system. He’s not a blogger, but tolerates having his meals photographed ad nauseam.
I’m Marie, one of the three chemist-bakers at the sale. I consider my kitchen an extension of the lab and Meandering Eats is my little corner of the internet, but it has been on a long hiatus and is slowly emerging from it. Dan and I met eons ago at UC San Diego’s rowing team. He rowed and I steered from the coxswain’s seat. Today, he bakes and I obsessively attend to every last detail regarding the bake sale. We’re also avid travelers and devoted dog people. The phrase “owner” doesn’t work here because, really, the dog owned us. Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Australian Shepherd, Bear, last week.
I’ve coordinated the sale since it started in 2011 and I’m extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished. From our amazing bakers to our fabulous hosts at Great News, we’ve raised thousands of dollars for No Kid Hungry and I can’t wait to see how we do this year. At the sale itself, look for Dan at the cashier’s station and don’t be surprised if he talks up his baked goods. He’s bringing pumpkin bread, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and slices of coconut bundt cake. I’m bringing banana bread, cheesecake pops, and s’mores kits with homemade marshmallows.
Also, Meandering Eats is co-hosting one of the raffles with the lovely Kim Lamoureux of Stella & Dot. Enter to win a lovely bracelet and for the highest donor, s’mores or cheesecake pops!
